As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow
by Zoulfa Katouh
Wonderful book about hope and war, 4.5 stars. The writing was amazing and I couldn’t put the book down. Salama’s character is wonderfully built along with the plot. Often I felt my heart getting tighter when she grieved.
Only small nitpick is that I found Kenan to be almost unrealistic in the fact that he was so flawless, as even his “flaw” of being content with risking his life to bring awareness is heroic and respectable. Salama felt real in her character and the way she acted, even if it was unethical. Kenan felt like he was another being created by Salama to try to make her feel better because as a character, he felt almost too perfect.
This absolutely did not take away from the story though, as I can see Kenan as being an embodiment of hope and the persistence of the human spirit, helping Salama overcome her greif.
