Skater Boy by Anthony Nerada

I only read this because of the book club I am in and grew increasingly frustrated for us choosing this choice as a group of adults. Yes, there are cute themes of courage and not being defined by one's past, but there are also a ton of problems in this YA novel including simple factual ones (no place in the state of Ohio would a flight to NYC take three hours!!) and more mind-numbing ones regarding the wavering motives of the obnoxious characters who go by nicknames like Big Mac and Big Cheese. What really gets under my skin is how clearly the author has no basis or relatability to the protagonist, painting him as a dumb apathetic burnout, but then writing his inner thoughts as neurotic, meticulous scholar. As in many romance novels, everything was tied in way too neat of a bow, with the ultimate happy ending proceeding over the full last third of the book as the central couple break up and get back together five times.
