Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

5.0

4.5 stars rounded up.

This book is not at all what I expected it to be. It started slowly, about a young woman and her life on the fringes of her tribe, and it grew like a crescendo as the characters and story developed. It was heroic and beautiful and heartbreaking and hopeful.

This is also an indigenous story written by an indigenous woman. I wonder how much of herself Boulley wrote into Daunis. She is absolutely the right person to have written this book.

A few smaller things that I liked: 1) I liked the time indicators written into the book were really fun. This book is set in 2004 and it lines up so well with what I remember from that time, down to the Hilary Duff movie she mentioned playing in theaters. 2) The centering of women characters of all ages. This book is rich with realistic, whole women. 3) The way Boulley writes about relationships between people, whether friendly, romantic, or predatory is done exceptionally well.

I am recommending this book to my friends from the Great Lakes Region, to my friends who like hockey, and to my friends who love a good adventure story.
