The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk

emotional hopeful informative inspiring sad medium-paced

5.0

The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk is about how trauma physically manifests itself in the body. The author combines personal experience, patient stories, and academic research to create a thorough depiction of how it happens, why it happens, and various treatment approaches.

It is an intense read, both for its subject matter and the scientific detail. However, you don’t need any special knowledge to grasp the concepts. There is some jargon, but it’s all described clearly and includes helpful diagrams.

So many of us have experienced trauma or adverse childhood events that manifest in our daily lives through emotional and physical responses. I am fascinated by the mind-body connection and talk to my therapist a lot about the interactions between my mental and physical health. This book truly deepened my understanding and I found it empowering to learn more about it.

I highly, highly recommend this to everyone - to learn about yourself, to support your loved ones, and to be more empathetic about something so many folks experience every day, but isn’t talked about enough.
