Hell Followed with Us by Andrew Joseph White

3.5

Are you feeling full of rage and/or despair at the Supreme Court/America/society/the government? Or perhaps you are upset at the way in which the Fascist Right is using the failures of our government and unregulated capitalism to radicalize a large swath of the populous to return to "traditional Christian values" that disenfranchise large portions of the population? Maybe you read and/or watched The Handmaid's Tale and you were into it but felt that some of the ways in which it understood gender, sexuality, eco-fascism, and white supremacy were either outdated or not addressed to the extent that you felt they should be? If your answer to any of these questions are yes then I think this will be a satisfying read for you. The trigger warnings at the beginning of this book are real though, so take care friends. Depictions of body horror and graphic violence appear throughout the text as well as an intensely emotionally abusive relationship. Also lots of misgendering and gender/body dysphoria, though as someone who has not felt those issues personally, I cannot speak to what an emotional response to those would be. Also there is lots of wholesome friendship and overcoming these things, so even though it deals with some deep stuff, it's overall optimistic. Plus the cover slaps.
