Glass Sword
by Victoria Aveyard
If I ever hear the words "little lightning girl" again, I'm going to lose my shit.
No lie, the first few chapters put me in a reading slump. But it got better, at least, as the book went on.
I felt surprised at myself that I felt sad about Shade's death. No tears or anything, it wasn't *that* impactful, but I was still sad nonetheless. I thought I wouldn't care much about any of the characters in this book, like I did in the first one, but they really grew on me. Even Cameron. Especially Cal, too. I didn't care much for him in Red Queen, but he was written so much better in this book.
Also, I found it weird and kinda funny that everyone's SO afraid of Mare (she even thinks of it multiple times) when LITERALLY one of the newbloods's power is DEATH. Anything he touches crumbles to ruin. Sure, lightning may be scary, but that shit is more scarier in my book. (Reminded me of Marcella Riggins in V.E. Schwab's Vengeful), only not as well-written as Marcella.
The book's plot was really slow to start, though I'll give Ms. Aveyard credit, the chapters where the characters are running and hiding had me slightly anxious and anticipating. She can write tension well.
Also, I loved how Maven got crueler in this book. I thought he's gonna be some bland-ass villain with empty threats (he still is, in some ways) but some of the things he did were downright cold-blooded, and I enjoyed it. Leaving the first note for Mare in the fist of the corpse of the baby? And in the end, when he leashed her and made her kneel in front of the entire kingdom in retaliation of Mare parading his mother's corpse for (admittedly) Scarlet Guard propaganda? Damn, Maven.
This series is really starting to grow on me. Yes, even unlikable Mare, whom everyone seems to hate with so much vehemence. I'm gonna start reading the next book immediately.
