Such a uniquely crafted fantasy set in a richly detailed world. The concept of this story is fantastic with a such a grand scope. I’m excited to read the next book and learn more about the world!
What I liked:
Terisai, she has a unique perspective and voice and I genuinely enjoyed watching her grow and develop as a character.
There was great tension built in recognizing what is wrong but still feeling love/duty/respect toward the thing.
Description of the world - gorgeously detailed, I enjoy fantasy worlds with scope and there is so much potential left to explore in this one!.
What I didn’t like:
The pacing at times felt off and I agree with the critique that too much happened "off page" and there were at times a bit too much info-dumping for my preference.
I would have loved more interaction and fleshing our of the other council members. There are 12, and we really only know 4. At the end of the book, Tarisai mentions one of them by name and I didn't even recognize the name it had been so long since that person had even been mentioned.
At times I wondered why they didn't use their gifts or rayspeak. They at times can almost seem to be forgotten and only used when helpful to the plot.
Overall, the story was enjoyable, unique, and with a lot left to discover. If you are a fan of books with a slower pace, an elaborate world, and broad scope, then this book is for you!
Edit to add: LISTEN TO THE AUDIOBOOK! With all the musicality contained in this book, I promise you, you will not do this book justice. But the audiobook? Amazing.
