I really really wanted to like this book. I can see what the author wanted to accomplish with this story but I just don’t think the idea was executed well.

Elle did a good job of writing authentic characters. This is the first fantasy book I’ve read that truly captured the essence of some parts of Black culture. With that being said,I found Rue to be so unlikable. I almost DNF because I really just could not stand her. Most of the plot came from Rue messing things up. Which would’ve been ok if there was some character development there, but there really wasn’t. Realizing at the end how stubborn she had been was surface level development. There is a deeper discourse to be had surrounding Rue, but I don’t think this is the right venue to discuss.

I will give Ashes of Gold a chance.
