"He's...honest. With everything. His thoughts, his expressions. He's kind. It's a rare kindness, Layla. I'm sure he still dreams. Maybe he's the only one in this whole city who still dreams at night. And when he looks at me, I feel... I feel like I'm being seen, and there is... there is a tiny bit of hope."

Extremely emotional novel that brings to life the suffering in Middle Eastern conflicts. It's set in Syria circa 2011-2012(?), but it also brings to mind other conflicts where civilians' everyday lives, their dreams of going to college, etc. are destroyed by unspeakable violence and destruction. I'm still haunted by how people generally hoped that their loved ones died instead of going into prison, because the conditions are so grim.

This book had lots of darkness, but lots of sweetness, too. I love good, kind characters, so I found the love interest Kenan to be very endearing.

Good read for anyone who likes sweet* romances that blur the lines between reality and imagination, and which are somehow endearing and heart-rending at the same time.

*The bonus story at the end of the Kindle version, at least, was spicier than I expected!
