American Royals by Katharine McGee

Oh would you look at that? My first DNF of 2020! (And it’s only Jan 2)!

I tried, believe me, I tried. I tried to stifle my bias against Katherine McGee and give this book a solid chance. The problem is, I was expecting lots of gossip and backstabbing drama, something like ANTM meets American royals. Instead, I get... this.
A half-baked cast of people I can’t keep track of with boring motivations and barely any character to speak of.

I am done with the stupid “Miss Perfect Who Secretly Has Flaws!!1!!” characters McGee constantly forces on us. She did that with The Thousandth Floor and she’s doing it with this. (Come to think of it, the characters are as soulless as those in that book as well, which says a lot about her writing considering she’s on her fourth book now. Hmm). Anyway, I was somewhat okay with Beatrice until dun dun dun!!! She has a crush on her bodyguard!!! How fucking original.

Don’t get me wrong. I love tropes. Fake relationships? Gimme. Friends to lovers? Yes!! The point is, I don’t mind tropes AS LONG AS THEY’RE DONE RIGHT. AND THIS CRAPPY ASS STORY ABOUT THE PERFECT PRINCESS AND HER BORING BODYGUARD AIN’T IT.

The only characters I had a little bit of interest in reading was Samantha (rebellious princess AND we share a name) and Daphne (the token villain). However, they really aren’t that interesting for me to suffer through chapters of Beatrice’s angst and the other girl’s (what was her name again?) longing for Jefferson. I literally gave up on page 65. Normally, I try to make it to a 100 before I stop but reading this was awful. I will never read anything from this author ever again.
