This book is kind of a love letter to rom coms but it’s more of a made-for-tv teen Disney movie—if Disney ever made movies about horny gay teens
Overall the whole book just felt weak. Weak worldbuilding, shallow character motivations and development, surface-level humor and insight, and a rushed weak ending
The ending particularly annoys me. I really thought thatsomehow mers were going to gain the ability to go back and forth between mer and human whenever they wanted. Because Sean brought up valid criticism that the mers are all aghast at how the human world is but don’t do anything to change it, just be human for a month and then fuck off back to the ocean. But if they could go back and forth, Sean and Ross could be together and the mers could work on doing real change in the human world. But no. Nothing changed. Absolutely nothing, they’re not even together in the end. No true lessons learned and no impact left.
