Book of Night by Holly Black

3.5

I kept bouncing between whether this was a 3 star or 4 star book. The beginning was pretty rough, and the first 50 pages or so were a bit info-dumpy. From there it went through some parts that were interesting and kept me turning pages to other parts that were slow and/or cringeworthy. The characters weren't very fleshed out, and some of the info that got dumped was irrelevant at the time and only came back later after I had forgotten it. Saving that info until later would have been more impactful. The author also kept describing people's outfits, which I personally hate in books, especially when it has no relevance to the story. It feels out of place and clunky and takes me out of the story. I don't know why the author decided to call the Book of Night, the book that is in the title, by three different names. That just struck me as odd. I have not read any of Holly Black's other books, so I have nothing to compare this writing to. But overall I think the story itself was compelling, and Vince's storyline kept me interested enough to want to find out how it ended. I'm not sure if I'll end up reading the second book, but I don't regret reading this one.
