I was underwhelmed by the first book, but really loved this one. I still think that the pacing could be better- it felt pretty slow at some parts. I would love to see a movie version, partially just so some of what I feel was meandering would be cut down. The magic system still remains super cool and i loved the development of Ione and Elm's relationship. I prefer them to Ravyn and Elspeth. Perhaps it was the varying points of view in this book that made me like it more- I appreciated the story jumping around a bit more because of my aforementioned desire for a faster pace. I felt much more attached to the characters in this one. Overall, really loved this one.
