A Lesson in Vengeance

-YA horror
-literary references
-LGBTQ representation
This is an entertaining novel! Owing much to The Secret History, classic Gothic literature, and likely a bit of Hogwarts, this novel follows Felicity Morrow during her super-senior year at Dalloway boarding school. Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, Dalloway is an elite school where the students design their own studies and take themselves too seriously. After the tragic death of her girlfriend, Felicity left school to undergo intense therapy. Now she is back and ready to resume her thesis on the Dalloway Five, a group of women suspected to be witches and who all died mysteriously on campus in 1712. With the arrival of Ellis, a new student who happens to be a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Felicity finds a new friend who encourages her to dive back into the occult studies that led to Alex's death last year. But is Ellis really Felicity's friend, or is she just trying to get inspiration for her next novel?
The first half is a bit slow and then everything gets wrapped up kinda quickly. So, there are some pacing issues. And I would've liked it if the other roommates were more developed. The vibes are strong though-- references are made to The Yellow Wallpaper, Rebecca, The Haunting of Hill House, and more. Someone pointed out that Ellis is clearly based on Donna Tartt, which is a delightful choice. I would read more by this author.
