Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar

I have had this on my bookshelf for about 10 years, and somehow only now managed to dive into it. Free-wheeling is one description given in the blurb, and probably the one that comes to mind most readily just after finishing the linear story. Perhaps this, together with my reading it in fits and starts, contributed to it being hard to follow in many places, or perhaps I'm just not used to reading something quite so "imagé". Certainly it felt like a novel that would reward careful re-reading if I am to really absorb everything that Cortázar was trying to communicate, but I also found it rather a demanding read, and so don't feel immensely motivated to return to it immediately. I will have to rely on a future re-reading, probably of the non-linear (expanded) form of the story.
