 More disappointed than dislike.

If you’ve watched 10+ romcom books or movies, you know the plot. The couple won’t believe they’re a match but are super attracted to each other. Nothing too interesting there. Jess’s character background is interesting but wished they explored more on that, maybe I’m reading the wrong book… but definitely not enough of River’s back story. It’s not a secret that every fictional romance has to have a moment when they break up and then get back together. That resolution did not work with me. Maybe just me. Side characters are very cliche and forgettable.

Jess is interesting but again, wished it was more about her struggle with dating while being a single mom. Wished “there was more conflict in the whole I’m getting paid to date a man” thing. Kinda fell flat for me. There could’ve been so much more. But simply because this is a romcom book doesn’t mean it can dismiss those aspects for more room for her attraction towards this man she met for a few weeks.

River has more personality than most romcom male love interests but still fell flat. I wished they leaned more on “the shy scientist who believes in love”. He smiles and laughs! Which is abnormal in romcom books lol. He’s got an interesting premise with his back story but is reduced to being a love interest. It’s unfair that we got so little of his backstory.

Which brings me to my next point. What’s the point of a third person pov writing style when you are just going to stick with 1 person’s pov. We could’ve gotten so much more with River’s backstory as well. We could’ve explored his much needed backstory and his thoughts (not the horny ones). The writing style is a little hard to follow at first but got used to it soon enough.

Overall, a super quick fluffy read but lacked much in other areas.
