Here there are monsters

“Monsters were way more interesting to Deirdre than animals, even talking ones.” -Amelinda Bérubé, Here There Are Monsters

How often do you hear me say I decided to read something because the cover was pretty? Go ahead. Roast me. Yet again I was pulled in by the cover and let down by the actual book.

Here There Are Monsters follows Skye, whose sister has gone missing. But the urgency of that situation is diluted by incredibly slow pacing. Also, this book weaves in a fantasy/horror element but in such a confusing configuration, it just made very little sense to me. It would have worked better if there was no fantasy aspect in the story.

Overall this book was about sisters with an extremely toxic relationship. The pull of power. The answers to powerlessness. It was about trying to rescue someone from themselves, but seeing everything around you get destroyed in the process. And when I put it like that it all sounds really interesting. But when you throw in all the weird monsters made of animal bones it just hits different.
