How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House by Cherie Jones

5.0

just finished How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House by Cherie Jones. The story takes place in Baxter's Beach, Barbados and it is about a woman named Lala that lives with his criminal husband on the beach. On the night that Lala goes into labor, he kills a man. On the other side of the coin, we meet Mira Whalen, the widow of the man killed that night. She also carries a secret from her past and is profoundly vulnerable. The men in the book are abusive and violent, and very difficult to like. Except for one.
I loved how the story unravels, changing constantly the point of view and the timeline. We find out about the characters motivations and their deeply wounded lives through this jumps in the timeline and the visceral narration of their traumatic experiences.
Spotless prose with a very lyrical imprint. This book is longlisted for the Women's Prize and I can see why!
Best read of the year so far
For me is a five stars
