A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee

3.0

This will be a great October/Halloween read if you're looking for something darker and occult. The story follows high school girls at a boarding school investigating witch-related murders. The book has beautiful, aesthetically pleasing world-building and descriptive writing. For some that might be over the top, but for me I really enjoyed it. The entire vibe of the book is dark academia, and I always appreciate an LGBTQ+ story with a plot that was unique enough that it didn't feel overdone.

Cons: The book's depiction of high school boarding schools is wildly over the top and unrealistic. The girls are openly drinking, smoking, and skipping classes with no consequences. The headmistress is introduced in the first chapter and then disappears for the majority of the book, only to reappear at the end for one scene unrelated to authority. There are also significant plotholes that make the book hard to follow at times.

Overall it was a good book and I'd recommend it as an easy October read.
