Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

5.0

🤯 This book is and 100% deserves to be at the top of all the best seller lists. THE FIRE KEEPER’S DAUGHTER is a debut novel by Angeline Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The novel is rich, layered, and gripping. Although the book is labeled as YA mystery, it really transcends genres and is also part romance, part thriller, part coming-of-age, part police drama... with a kickass protagonist who knows a lot about Ojibwe medicine and chemistry.

I don’t want to give too much away, but what I most appreciated about this book was its focus on community. I also really liked its exploration of tensions—tensions between the United Statesian government/police and Native peoples; tensions between Native peoples themselves: those who are enrolled in tribes vs. those who aren’t; tensions between those who are ~fully~ Native and those who are half-white, such as the protagonist, Daunis; and tensions between the Ojibwe and white people living in Saul Ste. Marie.

I had no idea where this book was going half the time, which is exactly how I like my thrillers... and I’m so excited to check out Boulley’s future novels.
