Punching the Air
by Ibi Zoboi, Yusef Salaam
amal is arrested for a fight started in a gentrified neighborhood. sent to prison, he is forced to rethink a lot about what it means to be black and be young, to rethink the phrase "boys just being boys" and rethink about his place in the world. while there, he continues to experiment with his artistic capabilities and his poetic form, all together creating this story.
this book is so, so beautiful. listening via the audiobook was a wonderful experience, but i plan as well to read it. i want to see the way the poems are structured, see the form that they take and the way that the words jump off of the page. this was a stunning read. it was moving. it tackles a lot of issues that i don't see all that much in a lot of prevalent young adult fiction. i'm glad to have this story displayed in my classroom.
i think that there is something very beautiful in the relationships and if i could have one wish, it would only be that there was more.
