After reading this book, I completely understand why it has all those stickers on the front. This was plainly and simply excellent. The mystery was interesting and so well paced and the story was given so much time to breathe. I was amazed at all the details with the setting, the culture of the town and tribe, and all the characters that felt vast but also were so easily held onto. I could really picture the place we were in and the character relationships felt real and layered and were so well done.
Most of my highlighted lines, however, were about identity. Daunis is such a compelling character. She’s smart, she’s different but not completely unique, and she has so much love without being someone who feels untouchable or saintlike. By the end of the book, I was rooting for Daunis far more than I was hoping for a satisfying closure to the main mystery story line. Luckily, we were given both.
