Obie Is Man Enough by Schuyler Bailar

emotional hopeful informative fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix

3.5

I think I might just be a little old or this book, because the lack of dimension in characters really bothered me. While in principle I ADORED this book and loved to read about Obie and his experience being a trans and Korean swimmer competing with his chosen gender, the book felt very awkward in points, simply because the character was never able to act his age. Obie bounced between extreme introspection and ignorance, I felt he was never able to understand why characters acted for themselves, or why they made decisions that hurt him. Instead it was just ignorance and him projecting his own self-pity. Sounds like I'm really complaining but overall I liked this book a lot.
