If I Never Met You
by Mhairi McFarlane
Read this hot on the heels of “Olive” — and it was a breath of fresh air. I’ve always liked McFarlane’s books - sure it’s rom-com territory, but the banter is actually genuinely witty - like literary and political references witty. And her women protagonists are genuinely smart and behave that way. I liked the characters of Laurie and Jamie and Laurie’s friends. I felt like the very ending bobbled just a tiny bit on this one, but thoroughly enjoyed the ups and downs along the way - a satisfying, cosy read.
