Heartbreak for Hire
by Sonia Hartl
Rating: 3 stars
What I Liked: This was a lot of fun and had some really cute moments. The writing was smooth and it was very engaging and readable.
I quite liked the central relationship. It was sweet at the start, but I really enjoyed the angrier tension when they met each other againand I liked that he knew that she was a Heartbreaker by that point, and that it wasn’t a sore point in their relationship.
I also liked that the book did explore the ethicality of the Heartbreaking as a profession / activity. When it was first introduced as a concept it was easy to see it as acceptable and even fun, but as the story went on it really made it clear how morally weak Margot’s arguments for it were, and I was glad that the main character, Brinkley, realised that it wasn’t ethical.
What I Didn’t: I did find the chemistry between the two leads, Brinkley and Mark, was a bit up and down – it wavered for me a little bit near the middle and I wasn’t as invested in them as a couple as I was Brinkley’s coming to terms with her relationship with Aiden, her mother, and . I also thought the ending was quite blunt and felt a little thrown together.
Overall: This was cute and a nice way to pass the time. There were a few things I wasn’t so keen on – the relationship was nice, but it wasn’t the most interesting to me personally, and I was far more interested in the exploration of the ethicality of the Heartbreak for Hire as a profession and Brinkley’s personal development. Both of which are fine, but as a romance, it didn’t work so well for me and felt a little bit flat towards the end once the initial tension between them had been resolved.
Would I Recommend It?: Yes, if you want a cute, light colleague romance with a little bit of enemies to lovers.
Would I Read Something By The Author Again?: Yes.
Content Notes:
Other: On page sex, infidelity / cheating (in past and side characters), difficult relationship with parents.
