The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk

challenging dark emotional hopeful informative reflective sad slow-paced

4.25

A fairly clinical but generally compassionate look at one man's work and research into trauma integration. He's not shy about describing the kinds of horror inflicted on those he's studied, which as you might expect is kinda harrowing to read, but it feels more like an appropriate setting of context for the discussion of treatment effectiveness rather than an exercise in voyeurism. Lots of great cases and ideas to explore if you can handle all that though! Even if you can't identify any acute traumatic experiences in your past, I think most people will be able to benefit from the understanding of emotional and physiological integration techniques laid out here.
