The premise of this book is awesome!! In a dystopian world where "Cinderella" is scripture young girls prepare for the day that they will go to the King's mandated ball and hopefully be "chosen" by a man. Otherwise they become "forfeits" and no one knows what happens to forfeits. Our protagonist is a fiery queer girl who definitely does not want to be chosen by a man and through sheer will power and the help of some others she attempts to assassinate the king and shut down this horrible practice for good. I loved the concept and being back in a YA dystopian world was amazing...at first. The book generally lost steam in the middle and was really underdeveloped in terms of world-building and character development. I wanted to learn so much more and didn't. A lot of simple explanations were given for things that could have been fully fleshed out. A reminder that a 3 star review from me means I liked it. I just didn't "really" like it or "love it" at the end.
