A Syrian pharmacy student is forced to work as a surgeon (and nurse and aide and all other hospital duties) as the other staff are killed in multiple, relentless bombings. She has lost so many family members & is hanging tightly to the one remaining, her pregnant sister in law. She lives in fear, PTSD leading to hallucinations, as she struggles between staying to help her community & fleeing to safety.

Salama’s story is painful, poignant, current & an absolute must read. You are transported to her reality, multiple quotes throughout the book could have been torn from today’s headlines in Gaza. This is such an important book. Salama is a remember forever character.
