Punching the Air
by Ibi Zoboi, Yusef Salaam
This is a beautiful and heart-breaking novel told in verse. Though there is nothing beautiful about the story itself, about a black teen who was wrongfully incarcerated. But the writing and the emotion behind it are beautiful. I listened to the audiobook, but wish I also owned a physical copy so that I would be able to quote some of the lines better.
It's a very quick to get through and an easy read even for those who haven't picked up poetry before. I recommend that everyone picks up this novel.
