Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

5.0

This book is so important.

I felt so many emotions throughout this story. It was so raw, powerful and eerily beautiful. This book shows the extremes of human capacity. It illustrated how cruel and unforgiving people can be to one another but it also shows that in times of horrible distress, you can still find those that are willing to put others before themselves. 'Mother' was a perfect example of all of the good that a person can be and how much love can pour our of one single being.

I fell in love with the characters as I did in [b:Salt to the Sea|25614492|Salt to the Sea|Ruta Sepetys|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1437084512s/25614492.jpg|27126244] and the whole story. I found myself hating several of the people that Lina comes in contact with but then also being surprised by the kindness that can be shown. This book shows the horrors of what those living during this time had to go through and it helps me to truly appreciate what I have today. This had me feeling thankful for life and the simple pleasures that Lina and the rest did not have.

The note from the author at the end was also riveting as she spoke of how she got the inspiration for this novel. The ending of this book had me in tears and I am so glad that I was able to read this along with [b:Salt to the Sea|25614492|Salt to the Sea|Ruta Sepetys|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1437084512s/25614492.jpg|27126244]. If you haven't read either of these books, I strongly urge you to get your hands on a copy.

5/5: Well deserved.
