Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I didn't read the cover so I was pretty surprised to discover a dark thriller, but the way the characters and especially the protagonist had been introduced kept me hopeful and reading even as it got quite dark. Loved all that I learned about Ashinaabe culture, from the stories to the language to the rituals. Made me reflect on the tools I would use to navigate a situation like this, and I was glad our protagonist had those at hand.
