Almost American Girl
by Robin Ha
This was a very eye-opening memoir by Robin Ha. It follows her life moving from Korea to America and how her mom didn’t tell her they were permanently moving - and Robin had to start from scratch. And not just a new school with no friends, but she doesn’t know how to speak English well yet. I couldn’t imagine the loneliness she must have felt experiencing that, but the book did a great job explaining it. It was also great to see the use of art as a way to bond and it was Robin’s way of finding herself again. I also liked how Robin didn’t just make her mom the “bad guy,” so to speak - she did a great job of showing the tough decisions that her mom had to make as a single parent, especially from Korea, where the expectations are much higher. Overall, a great memoir and great art. Would read more by the author!
