I really loved this book. I was never a competitive swimmer, but I’ve always felt extremely at home in water. When I was a kid, I would dream and pray to become a mermaid and leave humanity and gender behind. I never understood why a mermaid would want to become human. I was definitely bothered by all the talk about menstruation but I related to the feelings of it being forced upon you, an ending of happiness, and that if I was a mermaid I wouldn’t have to deal with it. I admired Renyu for achieving what she wanted in the end, however ambiguous it was.
