This is a story filled with Malaysian cultural references and folklore, mixed with the classic tale of little red riding hood. It’s interesting to start seeing books reference the pandemic and I’m glad it was more than a throw away to set the time frame; instead the characters repeatedly encountered this challenge. I thought some of the resolutions were a little too easy and quickly wrapped up, like the magic alligator that appears to eat the teeth. I expected it, but still hated that Firman didn’t get a chance to make any amends as a human.
