I initially heard about this story on Tiktok, and it peaked my interest due to the "found family" trope. This book is so so much more than just found family, coming of age, or any other trope that might fit. Tarisai is a strong, emotional and deeply thoughtful mc who, like most children, is drawn to the love of her mother, called only as The Lady.

After years of manipulation and schooling, The Lady asks Tarisai to gain the trust of the prince of their land, and kill him. Tarisai goes through the challenge of choosing to follow the easy (yet evil) path her mother has laid out for her, or to go against her blood and forge a new path of her own.

The characters are unique, beautifully complex and easy to love. I was physically smiling, laughing and wanting to throw my kindle as I read. It was hard for me to guess the next move of anyone, including the counsel members and Tarisai herself. I love the mentions of LGBTQ representation, and the diversity in religion, and the WORLD BUILDING. I can picture all of the realms, their people and the pride each feel. Overall I was overjoyed and deeply entertained.
