Book of Night by Holly Black

5.0

CW: child abuse, death, murder, violence, blood, alcohol and drug use, human experimentation, self harm, a lot of focus on trauma & traumatic experiences, mental illnesses & their symptoms, casual ableism (st*pid, cr*zy, etc), sex (fade to black, nothing graphic)

I loved this, for so many reasons. the end made me cry and i know its currently only meant to be a standalone, but if another comes out or even just a novella/short story, I will absolutely pick it up.

note that the book does go back and forth in its story. you'll get chapters of present day then it'll flash back to Charlie's past, growing up and learning to be the thief she is as an adult. I know some people don't like plots that play out in this fashion, so thought it'd be good to know!

also: regardless of writing style, this IS an adult novel. it's a story intended for adults, that's how that works. though some may feel it reads a smidge too YA-novel-esque, it is absolutely an adult novel. thank you ♡
