Classmates Vol. 1: Dou kyu sei by Asumiko Nakamura
In a veritable sea of books from Japan, it can be difficult for some titles to reach new shores, let alone a title from a niche genre to be licensed three times in English. But that is just the case after North American Publisher Seven Seas has presented in 2019 a new edition—for the first time in print Classmates (Dou kyu sei) by Asumiko Nakamura.
Especially since the previous English edition was less than desirable, it’s positive Seven Seas rescued the title, licensed it also for print and brought on translator Jocelyne Allen and Lillian Diaz-Przybyl tasked with adaptation and Ray Steeves on lettering. Though some wordplay or pop culture references may go over heads. The way to handle such challenges is argued and likewise varies by publisher. No one is perfect either, it makes me regretful to write a couple errors were noticeable in the Seven Seas edition. Sound effects are entirely absent in the first panel on page 99 and there is a typo at the bottom on page 100. Hopefully Classmates sells well to be quickly reprinted with small corrections.

In a new release, Anglophone readers can celebrate finally having a more professional English edition.
Minor note for a teacher sexually pursuing a student which is not reciprocated.
