I enjoyed reading this book, however, it did take a bit to continue and see it through to the end. It was well written and I enjoy the world it’s set in but the action was a bit slow for the beginning into the middle of the book. I do believe it was necessary to really set up and demonstrate the character growth and moral greyness that Mare is developing, but it still meant that it took a bit to get through. I also didn’t really feel too much at the deaths and the new bloods in the prison raid, I really only felt upset for Shades death, and found it a bit difficult to keep some of the less frequently mentioned new bloods names and abilities straight but I don’t think that’s Aveyards fault as much as it is my memory and attention. I’m glad I trusted the author and stuck through to the end though because I’m excited with how it ended and looking forward to the new book and what will hopefully be a slightly more engaging plot now that much of this character development has been established and rooted.
