I disagree with the disdain for the prose and writing.

It’s a coming of age story centered around a second gen Chinese-American girl. The author has stated how deeply personal what she poured into this book was, and that she considers herself an artist and not a writer. This book is a work of art.

I love the prose, I think it speaks so well to the mental place of Ren and where she is at throughout the novel. The characters are well thought out. As someone who competitively swam through school, I can tell you that this book captures the love-hate relationship most teens have with swimming so well. The book is visceral and odd, and as a lover of weird, and as a celebrator of the weirdness and horror in the daily act of living, I love this book. Great read, it went by really fast for me.
