Yikes.

This woman's privilege and lack of compassion for others is astonishing. When I got to the part about her son's autism diagnosis I really didn't like what she had to say. Suddenly dreams of her child getting a phd wash away because her son has autism? Tons of autistic people get advanced degrees and that statement both proves that 1) your expectations for any child are about you not them and 2) that you're going to treat your son in a limited fashion that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Then whenever the kid has a meltdown she gets upset about how *horrible* being the mom of an autistic boy is. And lo and behold, she subjects her son to all these weird-a** treatments and medicine man s*** which is ableist and racist all at once. Nothing screams racist like thinking that "exotic" cultures are "more in tune with nature" and are so wise (but of course, she'd never give up her privileged lifestyle). I feel sorry for her son, he's the one who truly needs compassion here.

Thanks for telling me to have self compassion, I'll work on it, but Neff very seriously needs to work on critical self reflection because her self compassion has become justification for not thinking critically. This book doesn't really add too much to what I know already anyway - this is the first time that I've actually wanted to put a book in the trash.
