I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee

5.0

If I could give this book a million stars, I would. I was absolutely blown away by every moment in this book. There was never a moment I didn't like, never a second I thought the story was lacking in any way. It was fun, romantic, empowering, and just incredible.

Also, it's so queer?? I had no idea, but it was SUCH a lovely surprise to not only discover that our main character Skye is bi, but multiple of the most prominent supporting characters are a part of the LGBTQ+ community as well. It was also so nice to see a book with a bi girl who was falling for a boy. I'm always here for a good sapphic romance, but bi girls are bi, and we should have more rep for canon bi girls dating boys, too.

But, for real, this was so much fun to read. The singing competition plotline made me remember how much fun it used to be to watch American Idol with my family growing up. It was so fun to read about, but Lyla Lee also made such a good choice to not over-do it on describing the dances and songs. Plus, she included real songs and Kpop stars that I can go check out now!

Henry as a love interest was just--*chef's kiss*-- so good. He warmed my heart and I was swooning over him pretty much the whole time! I liked that since the romance wasn't the main plot we were dealing with, there wasn't much drama as the two of them fell for each other. I liked just seeing them be cute and him be so supportive of Skye.

Lastly, I just wanna shout out the incredible sense of girl power that this book is just imbued with. Most of the characters are girls, and Skye makes some really great friends throughout the book. Even though they were in competition with each other, they were true friends and supported each other in the best way.
