I'm not sure what I was expecting but I just found this ok. I think because it was so long, I was just ready for it to end. I found the characters pretty flat - I couldn't remember who most of them were without the frequent reminders embedded in the text, like the nicknames "baldy", "East Texas", etc. Only a few stood out. The women characters were the most 2 dimensional. The final "showdown" was over in minutes so the whole book was the lead up to it and a little bit of the aftermath. The characters didn't really grow or change except for a couple of them and they get killed anyway, so what was the point. Not really much tension at all.
It was an ok read and fit into my phase of consuming shows and books about pandemics and their aftermath (I wonder why...PS - if you want a good show about post-pandemic, watch Station 11 on HBO Max. I will read the book at some point). I know this book dated, even if it was updated to be in 1990 from the '70's, and I took that into account with my review.
