Heartstopper Volume 3 by Alice Oseman

5.0

A super cute coming-of-age graphic novel about figuring out your sexuality, how you fit into the world, and finding who you are.

Charlie and Nick have been going on for a few months and are slowly feeling comfortable about the idea of telling everyone. But that means Nick actually coming out, and that’s a super big step, especially when Charlie confides in him about how hard being outed the year before was for him. With the school year coming to a close, there’s a school trip to Paris on the cards, and the City of Love is casting its spell on more than just Charlie and Nick. Tara and Darcy share more about their relationship’s origins, Elle and Tao finally face their feelings, Aled opens up about someone special in his life, and the teachers accompanying the students are getting just a little bit cozy with one another. A week in Paris could be the make or break of all these relationships and revelations are made that become a cause for concern for Nick in particular...

This book was such a fun instalment in the series and I LOVED being able to get to see and learn more about Charlie’s friends – while the primary focus is still on Charlie and Nick, this book had a much bigger focus on everyone else’s stories and relationships than the previous two books. Also the teacher subplot? I love it and I want more!

One thing I’m excited (this doesn’t seem like the right word, but you get what I mean) to see unfold across the rest of the series is the new revelations about Charlie – content warning for self harm and eating disorders. I was not expecting Alice to go there with any of these characters, but I’m intrigued to see where this part of the story goes, particularly with Nick becoming more and more concerned and wanting to help.

As I’ve said previously, I really enjoy Alice’s art style – it’s simple yet fun and a great introduction to the graphic novel genre. Every interaction and conversation between these characters feels so organic and real, and there’s definitely a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the book, from laughing out loud, to ‘awwing’ at how cute everybody is, to being hit in the feels by the sadder moments.

If you’re a sucker for a cute coming-of-age romance, love graphic novels, and can’t get enough of LGBTQIA+ reads, Heartstopper needs to be near the top of your TBR! It’s a stunning series and I can’t wait to see how they’ve adapted it for Netflix. A must-read!
