Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

5.0

"When our loved ones die, the love stays alive in the present."

What a beautifully written debut novel. I mean, WOW. This one was so good. If I had to sum up this book in one word, that word would be POWERFUL. Focusing on a community in the midst of a drug crisis, with so many betrayals, this book is emotional and heartbreaking in all the right ways. Daunis was such a brave and strong protagonist, and so much of the story focused on what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman). Boulley does an amazing job of weaving the story through the generational trauma and racism that the tribes have faced, and how those feelings and situations impact their daily lives. From "blanket parties" to traditional medicine and ceremonies, I really enjoyed learning more about the customs and traditions of the Ojiwbe community from an #OwnVoices author. This is technically a YA Murder Mystery, but there's so much more to it than that. This book touches on so many tough, yet so important topics and can be relatable to people of any age. Compelling, multilayered and powerful, this is a book I think everyone should read.

"Kindness is something that seems small, but it's like tossing a pebble into a pond and the ripples reach further than you thought."
