I don't have much experience reading novels in verse so I was a little intimidated by The Poet X, but I'm so glad I read it! The story is told through Xiomara's poems. At fifteen years old, she finds herself receiving unwanted attention and turns to poetry as an outlet. Throughout the novel, Acevedo touches on big themes such as mother-daughter relationships, religion, complicated family dynamics, and adolescence. I loved this book and look forward to reading more by Acevedo!
Graphic: Emotional abuse and Sexism
Moderate: Body shaming and Homophobia
