A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee
3.0

Plot:
The book starts with Felicity trying to finish her college after taking a year break because of the death of her best friend (secretly lover) Alex. Felicity gets serious with the idea of witches and witchcraft and takes it to a different level by trying to attempt some spells. While Alex doesn't intervene in Felicity's attempt with witchcraft, she's clearly not happy about it. Alex is frustrated with how Felicity's upbringing and calls her spoiled rich girl and also is unhappy with Felicity's intention of being in the closet until after college. Felicity is annoyed with Alex's thoughts on her ideas about witchcraft and with how Alex could be harsh and hurtful. One late night after a party they get into a fight and Alex accidentally dies falling off a cliff into a lake. Felicity is consumed with guilt now and a young author Ellis who's joined college recently decides to help Felicity out of her misery.

Characters:
Felicity has a confused idea of how Alex died and is constantly in fear of ghosts that are either one of the possible witches or that of Alex. She stops talking her meds and decides to face the dead Alex in her own.
Ellis comes with no much introduction and simply sweeps Felicity off her feet. Her intentions are never clear throughout the book making the reader question her intentions.
Together they decide help each other.

What I liked:
- The atmosphere set was perfect bringing a dark mood throughout.
- The place where the students stay, the college, the library added so much to the story.
- The idea of using women who were killed as witches as a cover for something more was neat.
- Ellis brought significant heaviness to the story with her mysterious but open character.

What I didn't like:
- The way mental illness was handled or more like how it was encouraged to give up medication as it started dulling Felicity's thoughts was absurd.
- A trans character makes guides appearance without adding any value to the plot. Quinn is Ellis's sibling. Yes, they spill 1 story of Ellis's past but even so I think omitting that would'nt have made any difference.
- There are 3 other girls who stay with Felicity and Ellis and when they keep appearances throughout the book, one girl is given with background as she's black. It just comes up in a conversation but, nobody else's does.
- The ending was not satisfactory even though Felicity finds her footing back.
