“You eyes are wide open, but you see nothing.”
“My father always told me that a person is made up of all the little choices they make in life. The choices no one ever sees.”
“Sometimes I feel like we might burn down the world to cindery bits, with our love, our rage, and everything in between.”
This has been sitting on my shelf for sooooo long and I can't believe I didn't read it sooner. It's so frickin' good! I found myself obsessed with it. I couldn't put it down. If I had been able, I absolutely would've read this in one sitting. I genuinely think it's going to end up in my favorite books of the year. This book is like Lord of the Flies meets Handmaid's Tale. The themes around feminism, the patriarchy and the overall oppression of women were equal parts infuriating and empowering.
The main character, Tierney, was really relatable. Honestly, my main critique of her is that she gave some "not-like-other-girls" energy which wasn't my favorite. In most other aspects, I really admired her gumption and confidence. Getting to know the other girls in the camp was really interesting. The last half of the book, especially, ripped out my heart and stomped all over it while also giving me hope. I really would love to see this novel made into a movie! I think it had been picked up in 2019 but didn't go anywhere. If you ever hear about it being picked up by a film company, someone please tell me!
