4.5/5 Stars. Great story, amazing characters and unique worldbuilding. Amazing first book of this duology by Jordan Ifueko!
.
One of my favorite books to read so far in 2021!
The magic system was amazing, but sometimes I wondered what exactly magic could or couldn’t do and if there were any boundaries at all. The characters were extremely well-written and I was so glad to see some asexual representation. However, the last 1/3 of the story was a bit too fast-paced and it was a bit hard to keep up because so much was happening and the protagonist was traveling from one place to another so often.
I strongly believe that this book could have been a stand-alone but the cliffhanger at the end does justify a sequel (even though the book could have had a happy ending).
The setting of the sequel is supposed to take turns (I believe!) - SPOILER - and will hopefully take place in the Underworld, which wasn’t a focus in the 1st novel.
The overall pacing was -as I said- a bit inconsistent and bothered me a bit when I got halfway through. The plottwists and solutions felt very satisfying but a tiny bit rushed.
Maybe instead of writing two books, each 300+ pages, the author could have written one novel with 600 pages. But that’s just my opinion.
A great YA Fantasy novel with a unique setting, fierce and likable characters and a great storyline.
(This is just a silly sidenote, but the storyline gave me major Disney’s “Tangled” vibes. Strong female lead leaves the prison that is her home and tries to run from her destiny that the “evil” mother had foretold.)
Again, inconsistent pacing but the entire novel was very enjoyable regardless of that.
