The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma
by Bessel van der Kolk
challenging
slow-paced
I read this book based on a recommendation from a fellow writer. My goal in reading the book was to learn how to accurately describe trauma in my writing.
It was a very difficult read. It felt like reading a textbook, and I studied Neuroscience in grad school. However, it was also emotionally difficult. It demonstrated a clear and urgent need for society to become trauma-informed and recognize trauma as a key underlying factor in many health issues.
Once you start to recognize trauma, it's hard not to see it everywhere.
The book also offers hope for growth and recovery. I'm not sure I would recommend it for someone looking for help with their trauma (long and hard read with lots of stories of trauma). But I do recommend it for anyone working with people who are struggling with trauma.
Hope comes from healing.
