A reflective, fast-paced story. I probably read it too old as the writing was a little young for me, and I didn’t love the ‘tell don’t know’ style. That being said, a very impressive book for such a young author and loveable characters.
So good. Incredibly fleshed out characters, I only wish I got more time with them. The setting was great, the writing beautiful yet easy to read. Funny and a bit bleak. Very excited for the next one.
Thoroughly enjoyable!! A very easy read. Somewhat predictable but it is difficult not to be. The characters were likeable, or other balanced enough to be understood. I think it could have been a bit longer, as the ending was a tad abrupt. Overall, an exciting, fast-paced read that was surprisingly uplifting and democratic in it’s portrayal of the Catholic Church.
The concept? Really cool, really interesting. There is so much to be unpacked about these time-travelled refugees in contemporary Britain, and I just wish more time was spared for this.
The writing was… okay. Some metaphors sounded nice, but in reality had little meaning or, worse, were actually nonsensical, which left the prose feeling a bit haphazard.
I think the romance dragged the story down for me. A small romance as a tiny sub-plot would have been fine, but it took up such a large portion of the plot that all the parts of the narrative that were most interesting to me were sacrificed.
So much was revealed at the end but then there was too little time to actually unpack. Maybe leaving room for a sequel?
An interesting book nonetheless and I enjoyed the first half in particular.
